MAY 2024 / A History of Swimming WIP
MICHAEL LAUNDRY AT SCEN 46
Slip of the Lip welcomes artist Michael Laundry to a development residency for the project
A history of Swimming.
60 years ago this summer, John Cheever published The Swimmer in the New Yorker - a story about pool hopping. Laundry takes the audience from the Yangtze River to Lake Ontario via monologues and off-beat choreographed dance. The work attempts to deconstruct poolside performativity and the loss of pools while making a comment on threats to water in the Hydrocene.

Bio
Michael Laundry (CA/NO 1982) is an interdisciplinary artist working with emerging technology and performance. Laundry’s work often focuses on waterscapes to interrogate hydrological precarity, masculinity in crisis and neoliberalisation. Laundry choreographs immersive installations populated with performances, textiles, and 3D-printed or CNC-machined sculptures. Each element is a conceptually interrelated piece and performative action over one discrete artwork. Laundry holds a BA in Fine Art from The Artistic Faculty at the University of Bergen, and an MA in Comparative Literature from the Department of Linguistic, Literary and Aesthetic Studies at the University of Bergen.
